Starbucks - The Surrogate Office
Today I went to Starbucks.
I will confess that I am more of a Dunkins girl, but my Evil Twin had called me urgently telling me that something crazy was going on at the Starbucks over on Storrow Drive.
A little corporate craziness was afoot and I had to check it out for myself.
I usually associate Starbucks with oversized couchy chairs, big mugs, Missed Connections, and Macs. Not at all so at this particular Starbucks!
This is the Starbucks where people who've been downsized go to "work" when they can't tell their spouse that they are technically no longer actually employed.
I couldn't stop staring. There were deals being made on the sidewalk out front, folks with complicated looking blueteeth contraptions clapped to their ears, job interviews being conducted in comfy chairs, lots of keyboard keys being poked at urgently....
It was weird - it was like being in an office. An office with a really comprehensive cafeteria!
PS: The Starboobies are a gift. Who doesn't love a little subtle ta-ta graffti?

That's just a return to her roots! The early-days Starbucks logo showed a more anatomically correct mermaid.
Starbucks on Storrow Drive? Where is this?
There's one in Allston, near the IHOP. Is that the one?
I think it's called Soldiers Field Road at that point. I'm so intrigued now...I want to stop by and people watch. I've only stopped by that one for a quick coffee to go before, but I have noticed that is seems almost incomprehensibly busy considering its location.
How do we know they are unemployed and not self-employed?
Nothing like sipping your coffee and hearing interviewers behind you claiming they represent a "multimillion dollar operation".
I guess interviewing at Starbucks is one way to economize, but really...
(Note: My sarcasm is not directed at the self-employed and small businesses who might use the 'bucks for practical reasons)
Ahhhh I stand corrected - it is on Soldiers Field Road. The one by the IHOP.
And I think that is the IHOP that is open 24 hours...
